King of the Hammers 2017: The Campbell family makes KOH history as they finish the 181 mile desert race.
Shannon Campbell crossed the finish line to become the first 3-time King, just 20 seconds faster than his son, Wayland who took second place.
After Shannon and Wayland spent the last 20 miles of the race fiercely battling for the upper hand, trading positions several times, the two crossed the finish line. Wayland crossed the line first, but on corrected time, Shannon came out of top by a mere 20 seconds.
Shannon finished the King of the Hammers on three tires in 6 hours 46 minutes and 4 seconds.
Bailly Campbell unfortunately rolled during her first lap of the main event, and sustained a neck injury which took her out of the race. Her co-driver completed the race in Bailly’s car under time.
Only 50 racers of 122 who left the start line finished in the 14 hour time limit.
Not only did the Campbell boys earn the number one and number two podium spots in the main 4400 event, but they also finished 1st (Shannon) and 2nd (Wayland) in the UTV class.
This was the Campbell family’s first year racing the UTV class, and they report that they just came out to try it and have fun. All three, Shannon, Wayland, and Bailly, finished the race strong.
